Formed in 1988, Seattle

Mudhoney's beginnings are at the forefront of the Seattle scene, that would become known for "grunge".

Mark McLaughlin, now known as Mark Arm, started a band called Mr. Epp and the Calculations with some high-school friends from Bellevue, a suburb of Seattle.  They developed a cult following and in 1982 released a vinyl EP.   In 1983 they added another guitarist, Steve Turner.  They played their last gig in 1984.

Mark Arm and Steve Turner became close friends and helped form Green River in 1984.  However, during this time, Steve Turner was looking to start yet another band and spent his spare time coming up with new material with Mark Arm and Dan Peters, who played drums in Bundle of Hiss.  Feeling they had something going, they asked former Melvins bassist  Matt Lukin to join them.  They decided to call themselves Mudhoney, after Russ Meyer's movie Mudhoney.

In 1988, Sub Pop released the band's first single, "Touch Me I'm Sick" along with "Sweet Young Thing Ain't Sweet No More".   The EP Superfuzz Bigmuff  was released a few months later on Sub Pop...becoming the first big success for the Seattle label.  After their second full-length on Sub Pop in 1991, "Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge", they were offered a major-label contract with Reprise Records, which they signed in 1992.  They returned to Sub Pop in 2000.
