Eddie Vedder

Frontman of Pearl Jam

Born December 23, 1964

Eddie Vedder was born in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois. In the mid-seventies he moved to San Diego with his family.   The story goes that on his twelth birthday, his mother gave Eddie a guitar as a gift.  After dropping out of high school after some unusual family events, he changed his name to Eddie Vedder, "Vedder" was his mother's maiden name.

Vedder had several stints in San Diego area bands, including in the late eighties he was the vocalist for the funk-rock band Bad Radio.  It was during his time he first sang the song "Better Man", a song based on the relationship between his mother and his stepfather.  (He later recorded it with Pearl Jam).  During this time, it's become lore that he also workedias a night attendant at a local gas station, as well as part-time security guard.

After departing Bad Radio in 1990, Vedder's buddy, former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Jack Irons gave him a demo tape from a Seattle band that was looking for a singer. Vedder recorded vocals for three of the songs, which shortly after hearing, Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament called him to audition with them in Seattle.  They became Pearl Jam.

Shortly after the invite to join Pearl Jam, Vedder was asked to provide backing vocals on the Temple of the Dog album, a tribute to Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone.  Temple of the Dog would feature members of Pearl Jam and Soundgarden.

Vedder married longtime girlfriend Beth Liebling of Hovercraft in 1994. They divorced in 2000.
