 Alice In Chains
Alice In ChainsLayne Staley, Vocalist
Jerry Cantrell, Guitarist
Mike Starr, Bass
Sean Kinney, Drums
Formed in 1987, Seattle
Layne Staley formed the first version of the band while in high school, calling it Alice N' Chainz until he met Jerry Cantrell in 1987. Cantrell brought in his buddies Mike Starr and Sean Kinney and they began playing around Seattle, renaming themselves Alice In Chains. Columbia Records signed the band in 1989.
In the summer of 1993, Alice in Chains toured with Lollapalooza, however it proved to be the last time that they would go on a major tour. Tension developed between Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley on the direction of the band and it prevented them from future tours. In 1995, Staley began performing a few shows with Mike McCready, Pearl Jam guitarist, and Barrett Martin, Screaming Trees drummer. They later named themselves Mad Season and released one project, Above.
 In
1996, Alice In Chains came together to perform their first concert in
three years on MTV Unplugged.  During the show it was sadly
obvious that Staley was not well and long-persistant rumors of his drug
addiction were taking it's toll.   After the Unplugged show,
Alice In Chains opened four shows for the Kiss reunion tour, filling in
for STP.  On July 3,
1996, the band played their final concert, with Layne, in
Kansas City.

On April 20, 2002, Layne Staley was found dead in his condo of a heroin and cocaine overdose. The Seattle coroner estimated that Staley died around April 5, 2002.
